Join us for a series of textile workshops with artist Katie Schwab. Katie will be facilitating workshops to try out techniques such as marbling, natural dyeing, wool stuffing, hand stitching & machine sewing. Together, we will make a series of bespoke cushions for various community projects across the borough as part of the Becontree estate centenary celebrations.

Like sewing or textiles? Want to try something hands on and creative? Are you interested in learning how to make a cushion? Or want to meet new people….then these workshops are for you.

Drop in for one of the sessions or join us for all four. Here’s what we’ll be doing:

Monday 26th July 1-4pm at The White House
Try marbling and create your own marbled paper to take home

Tuesday 27th July 1-4pm at The White House
Work with natural dyes to create brightly coloured backing fabric for the cushions

Wednesday 28th July 1-4pm at The White House
Learn how to comb wool and create a hand-stitched ‘inner' for the cushion

Thursday 29 th July, 1-4pm at The White House
Learn basic machine- sewing techniques and produce a finished cushion

Suitable for families (children aged 10yrs+) | Children (under 16yrs) must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for the whole session

Capacity is limited due to Covid. The latest Covid H&S guidance will be adhered to when the sessions take place. The sessions will take place outside in The White House garden where possible.

 Katie Schwab’s artistic practice interweaves personal, social, and craft-based histories, often drawing from overlooked traditions of living, making and working collectively.

Katie is developing a new collection of functional textiles inspired by overlooked histories of industrial, domestic and material culture in Dagenham. The collection is being developed in collaboration with local manufacturers and makers, and will be used at The White House and other community spaces.
